CLEVELAND, Ohio —

A mother accused of leaving her five young children alone in a Cleveland home on Friday has been arrested, Fox 8 News reports.

Cleveland police said 22-year-old Wakiha Fayne turned herself in Saturday morning, and was arrested for child endangering. Her whereabouts before then are unknown.

The children, ages 14 months to 6 six years, were left alone in a duplex on East 46th Street. According to a police report, a social worker found them Friday morning living in “filthy” and “uninhabitable” conditions. The bug-infested home was littered with food and debris. It also lacked a working refrigerator and beds for the kids. Some of the children displayed signs of neglect and were in need of medical attention, the report stated.

The worker notified Cleveland police who then alerted the Department of Children and Family Services. An ambulance took the kids to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, where they were treated and released.

It was not immediately clear how long the children were by themselves, but a woman who lives upstairs from the family told police that Fayne was home at around 10 p.m Thursday evening. When officers responded there Friday morning, one of the children said, “Mommy went to the store,” the report stated.

Mary Louise Madigan with the Department of Children and Family Services told Fox 8 News that the four youngest children were placed in foster care, while the oldest is in the custody of his father.

Fayne is charged with five counts of endangering children. She is being held at the Cleveland Central Prison Unit until a court date is set in the Cleveland Municipal Court.
