Facebook Sex Sting Nabs Convicted Sex Offender
A police sting operation leads to the arrest of a convicted sex offender for allegedly trolling for underage girls on Facebook.
29-year-old Charles Wireman of Greenwich is being held in the Huron County Jail, on charges of importuning and attempted unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.
Greenwich Police said Wireman thought his new friend on Facebook was a 14-year-old girl from Crestview named Jasmine Willis, but “Jasmine” was actually police officer Robert Workman.
Investigators said Wireman, who is a registered sex offender following a 2005 conviction in Richland County for corruption of a minor, began exchanging messages with “Jasmine”
Officer Workman told Fox 8, “shortly after that, he goes into explicit detail of what he wants to do to this girl, almost like grooming her, you know, I’ll do this to you, I’ll do that to you.”
Investigators say Charles Wireman used a computer at the Greenwich Public Library to exchange over 5000 messages with the person he thought was Jasmine Willis. Police say many of the messages were sexually explicit.
“The thing that really disturbed me the most though personally, is when he said that his youngest girlfriend was ten years old while he was 21”, said Officer Workman. “I have an 11-year-old daughter so it kind of hit home then.”
Police said they initiated their investigation of Wireman, after receiving complaints that he had allegedly been following young girls as they left the library.
According to investigators, after a week of chatting on-line, Charles Wireman asked Jasmine Willis to meet him at Greenwich Park.
“And then he would take her to a remote location that he had set up where ‘nobody can see us, we’ll have our privacy’. It was remote all right,” said Officer Workman.
When Wireman arrived at the park with a sleeping bag and condoms he allegedly shoplifted from a local store, he was arrested as he approached an undercover female officer dressed in the clothes “Jasmine” said she would be wearing.
When Wireman was taken to the Greenwich Police Department, he learned the true identity of Jasmine Willis.
“I said ‘well I’m Jasmine’, stuck out my hand and shook his hand, and he just got real wide eyes, white as a ghost, and goes, ‘Well, this is awkward’”, said Officer Workman. “That was satisfying.”
