The Green Fire Department saved the life of an adorable dog on Thursday who was continually falling through the ice on the Portage Lakes.

Green Fire Capt. Randy Raines tells Fox 8 News that calls began coming into dispatchers about the dog around 11:53 a.m. yesterday.

Capt. Raines says residents along Brant Drive saw the dog struggling as it kept falling through the thin ice on the lake.

Firefighters knew they would have to get the dog out of the water quickly and a water rescue team was sent to the area.

Fire Medic Justin Pratt suited up and used what Capt. Raines called a ‘Water Walker’ to get out to the dog. The ‘Water Walker’ is a two-buoy type device that allows firefighters to more easily reach into the water.

Once Pratt had the dog, he and the yellow lab were reeled back to a dock and to safety.

According to Capt. Raines, the dog had a collar and tags, but authorities have been unable to contact the dog’s owners.

The dog is currently in the custody of the Summit County SPCA. Anyone with information about the dog is being asked to contact the SPCA.
