BENTLEYVILLE, Ohio— A walk in the park led to a harrowing rescue and a long road to recovery for a Chesterland couple.

David Ramsey, his wife Freia, and 8-year-old daughter Anya won't soon forget Christmas Day, when they took their new puppy on an afternoon stroll in the South Chagrin Reservation.

They were just off a designated trail near Squaw Rock. Ramsey had just climbed up one of the hills, helping his daughter to the top. That's when his wife lost her footing.

"So, as I jumped to reach for her, I lost my footing. She started sliding down the hill, and I came after her. And then came the puppy after us," Ramsey said.

Anya witnessed her parents tumble about 85-feet down the hill. She was not hurt. "My wife landed on the edge of the path, and that's where she stayed. She went unconscious there," Ramsey recounted. Freia Ramsey broke several bones in her face.

Ramsey remembers people coming to their aid before first responders from the Chagrin Falls Fire Department and Metroparks Rangers rescued them. "They helped my wife first, and got her on a Life Flight to Metro, and then they came and got me. They had to put me on a board and pull me up the hill," Ramsey added.

Ramsey broke his back and shattered his leg below the knee. Ramsey knows there will months of rehabilitation for he and his wife. Their new puppy also suffered a broken leg.

By profession, Ramsey does energetic healing. He usually helps others use their mind, body and spirit to get well. It is now he and his wife who need healing. However, he is grateful knowing what could have been. "I have an overwhelming sense of gratitude that I am alive and that my wife's alive. The only other emotion is peace that comes with that," Ramsey said with a tear in his eye.

The Ramseys do not have health insurance. Friends have set up a fund to help with their medical expenses.
